Skin Cancer Surgery

Mohs Reconstruction & Facial - Eyelid Lesion Removal

Dr. Paul Brannan, an Oculo-facial plastic surgeon, has been specially trained to perform reconstructive and corrective surgeries on the eyelids, orbits and face. These conditions can result from a congenital defect, photodamage, the aging process or trauma. Many procedures are referred to as "functional surgery" and are often covered by insurance. Dr. Brannan's experience in skin cancer surgeries has been enhanced by his unique alliance with a Dermatologist in his practice. Another aspect of his practice is "cosmetic surgery" which is performed to improve one’s appearance and enables you to look as good as your feel.

Surgical Procedures

Skin Cancer Facial Reconstruction

In most instances, Mohs micrographic surgery is done in our office to completely remove the cancer while maximizing the preservation of normal tissue. The reconstruction is performed immediately afterwards to restore function of the area with the best cosmetic outcome.

Facial & Eyelid Lesion Removal

Removal and reconstruction of facial and eyelid lesions, preserving form and function of the area involved while maximizing cosmesis.

Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery

The Mohs procedure is performed by fellowship trained surgeon Bradley Kovach, MD.

Mohs surgery, created by Frederic Mohs, MD, is an advanced microscopically controlled surgery for skin cancer. It allows for the removal of a skin cancer with very narrow surgical margins, minimizing the sacrifice of tissue while offering a high cure rate.

The Mohs procedure is used for:

  • recurrent skin cancers
  • invasive skin cancers
  • high-risk facial scalp skin cancers
  • thin-skinned areas
  • and other applications

"The cure rate for Mohs surgery is the highest of all treatments for skin cancer – up to 99 percent even if other forms of treatment have failed," said board certified dermatologist Heidi Anderson, MD, a partner of DOCs. "This procedure is the most exact and precise method of tumor removal and minimizes the chance of regrowth."

Mohs surgery is sometimes combined with reconstruction surgery, which is performed by DOCs partner Paul Brannan, MD.

Mohs surgeon Dr. Kovach received his B.A. in biology from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He received postdoctoral training at the Mayo Clinic and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and did his fellowship in Mohs surgery and advanced dermatologic surgery at Washington University.

The Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery Process

Mohs Surgery 1

The Mohs Surgery Process
Step 1:

The roots of skin cancer may extend beyond the visible portion of the tumor. If these roots are not removed the cancer will recur.

Step 2:

The visible portion of the tumor is surgically removed.

Step 3:

A layer of skin is removed and divided into sections. The ACMS surgeon then color codes each of these sections with dyes and makes reference marks on the skin to show the source of these sections. A map of the surgical site is then drawn.

Step 4:

The undersurface edges of each section are microscopically examined for evidence of remaining cancer.

Step 5:

If cancer cells are found under the microscope, the ACMS surgeon marks their location onto the "map" and returns to the patient to remove another layer of skin - but only from precisely where the cancer cells remain.
